MAY 2017

In New Zealand and Europe, the Unleaded Hoses are Green, and the Diesel Ones are Black; in the US, They're the Other Way Around, Except When They're Not.

Our 2017 Further West-World Tour began in Sebastian, Florida, and has now reached Corona, California. As you may know, we took the scenic route, making stops in New Zealand and the United Kingdom during March and April. Having flown from Los Angeles to Auckland to London back to Los Angeles, without once reversing direction, we can now testify that the world is indeed round, as far as we could tell. We are now back in the Blue Meanie, which has collected a lovely patina of dust from two months of LA sunbathing.

Spending most of the year on the road as traveling musicians presents us with situations and perspectives rarely seen outside our mileu. Here is a soupçon of what we're talking about:

  • While in New Zealand, neighbors nearby offered to sell us their awesome house and barn that would make a great studio for our recording and barning needs. Did you ever try conducting a major real estate purchase or orchestra from the opposite side of the globe and 12-hour time difference? Or applying for a mortgage when you have bizarre, sporadic income in different currencies? Or selling your existing home in absentia (more on this below)? Good luck with that.
  • I swear we have more office work than at our old office jobs. There is venue booking, travel booking, follow-up, promotion, solicitation, research, not to mention driving, songwriting, recording and the occasional performing music on stage.
  • Jet/van lag. We're now getting over an eight-hour jet lag, which has us going to bed and waking up freakily early, and feeling strangely lethargic and philosophical through much of the day, for sometimes the smallest act of kindness is also the littlest. When we cross time zones in the Blue Meanie, we have to factor in whether we need to rush or relax for an extra hour before our show. Okay, that one's easy.
  • Our ode to drinking water:

Sometimes it is skunky,
sometimes it is funky,
sometimes it is dusty,
sometimes it is crusty,
sometimes it is salty,
sometimes it is faulty,
sometimes when it's gushing,
it's only fit for flushing.

So when your Adam's ale,
tastes like fermented kale
open up the throttle
and buy it in a bottle.

We are now on our seventh photo album doumenting our 2017 Further West-World Tour. Here are all of them:

Southern US, mainly: Part 1, Part 2.

New Zealand: Part 3, Part 4.

United Kingdom, Part 5, Part 6.

Western US: Part 7.

This is the Vermont House You've Always Wanted, Unless You've Always Wanted Something Bigger or Nicer.

If you're a regular Newsdumpster diver, you've probably seen photos and heard us extolling the virtues of our tiny, depression-era Vermont house. As we've said above, we want to buy our neighbor's house, mainly for its expanded recording studio potential. It's beautifully situated on the south-facing slope of lovely Windham Hill in West Townshend, within an easy drive from Boston or New York. So if you're considering purchasing a charming and bright two-bedroom house with a nice big covered porch, and don't mind having us as neighbors, please reply to this Newsdmpster or send an email to rebecca@hungrytown.net.
