Horses Have Cruise Control, Right?
Good tidings from the bucolic Champoeg State Heritage Area, a kitten's throw south from Portland, Oregon. Over the past month we've been inching our way across the northern states in our first-ever Northeast by Northwest Tour. As evidence, we submit two photo albums, divided conveniently into Part 1 and Part 2, which is growing at a disturbing rate. It's taken some time crossing the country, due to the many shows dotted along our route and the fact that the US is freakin' enormous. It's occurred to us, however, that in this golden era of van travel, the pioneers who made this journey over a hundred years ago may not have had it so easy. Without the aid of imagination, we imagine how different things might have been for those early travelers:
- Those covered wagons would have been awfully bumpy over 70 mph..
- It was hard to keep your team fed because there weren't as many gas stations.
- Going online meant telegraph.
- The presidents on Mt. Rushmore would have been very young and perhaps difficult to see at a distance.
- Crossing a river was impossible.
- Getting stuck in bad weather might require dining on human flesh.
- Lacking satellite navigation, travelers would be at the mercy of their compass, wagonmaster and perhaps Mapquest.
