MARCH 2017

Kia Ora--A Traditional Māori Greeting Meaning "Greetings to Your Korean Car."

We had a fabulous February touring the American southwest. The landscape is part mountains, part desert and part dessert, especially if you enjoy sand after a meal. At one point, we even got to hang out with the great Finnish folk duo, and personal friends, Vellamo, in the wilds of Arizona. After a couple of shows around Los Angeles, we parked the Blue Meanie long term and beat a path to New Zealand, for the next phase of our 2017 Further West Tour.

Speaking of the Blue Meanie, as many of you know, it's a camper van that we use for touring North America, specially designed to carry our musical gear and Ken's extensive bubble collection. In its 11 years of service so far, the Blue Meanie has rolled over 250,000 miles (402,000 kilometers) and several million potholes. Before parting company for the next two months, we figured it was time to give the Blue Meanie the interview that it so richly deserves.

What is your most memorable experience?
On a high overlook on Cape Breton Island during a massive wind storm, Ken opened his door. The force threw him out and nearly over a cliff. I still have the dent as a reminder. I'd kill to see that again.

In your many years on the highway, have you ever hit any people or animals?
No people yet, but a few years ago while speeding down a lonely road in Montana, a flock of low-flying little birds came right at me. Three of them whacked me right in the forehead. I say it was an ambush.

In 2014, while touring in Washington state, an electrical fire put you out of service for more than two months. That must have been rough.
Is that a question? It sounds more like a dopey comment.

I mean, was that a difficult time for you?
My batteries got drained down and the dust was terrible, but I got a lot of attention for once. The coffee was good.

Do you have a favorite essential oil?
Diesel, of course.

Who do you like better, Rebecca or Ken?
Rebecca, because she hardly ever drives.

What is your favorite Hungrytown album?
Metal Machine Music. It really speaks to me.

That's Lou Reed, not Hungrytown.
Yes, that's what I meant.

Our Further West photo albums have grown to three parts, namely, Part 1, Part 2 and, here in New Zealand, Part 3.There will be more, whether you like it or not.

Annoyed that we advanced to autumn in March just by flying to the other side of the planet? Please visit Hungrytown.net or Facebook.com/hungrytown, and be annoyed that we advanced to summer in January just by driving south.
