May 2018 Newsdumpster

MAY 2018

Berlin, Berlout.

This Newsdumpster arrives on the eve of our departure from Berlin, just as we're about to sully the soil of Albion, as our 2018 Double-Crossing the Pond Tour of Germany and Great Britain reaches its part-way mark.

We did four shows in Germany over the last two weeks, and spent two days in Luxembourg City celebrating our 24th wedding anniversary (see photo above). Here is what we learned:

  • Despite its name, Germany doesn't seem to have many germs.
  • Based on our two previous tours of Germany, we spent several months learning German online.
  • It didn't help.
  • One word that kept coming up in our lessons was "Spargel," i.e. asparagus. Turns out, April is the start of that vegetable's short availability season. The German variety is white, fat, fairly expensive, lecker (tasty) and the central item on virtually every menu.
  • Luxembourg City center features a deep pit filled with a Medieval village, a river and a cave system. You get there by stairs or elevators. Quaint little bridges cross the river, while a big one crosses the whole place.
  • National speed limits:
    • Urban: 50 km/h (31 mph).
    • Two-lane highway: 100 km/h (62 mph).
    • Divided highway (Autobahn): none (use your mirrors).
  • Just when you finally coax your wheezy rental car up to 176 km/h (109 mph), a Porsche will pass you as if you were going backwards.
  • Every exit along the Autobahn features a bespoke graphic relevant to that region.
  • The German word for exit is "ausfahrt." We thought you should know that.

Part 1 of our Double-Crossing-the-Pond Tour photo album is about done. Part 2 will begin when we cross the channel. Our 2018 Home Turf photo album is also sitting around if you want to look at it.

Guy at bar: "Say, have you ever visited Hungrytown.net or Facebook.com/hungrytown?"

Bartender: "No."
