If You Follow U.S. Route 1 Down From Maine, You Run Out of Road at Key West.
At the end of January, our annual Further West Tour celebrated its first of three-and-a-half months, which was distinguished by ten days in the Florida Keys, which was further distinguished by the fact that this was our first time down there, and yet further distinguished by the fact that the four venues where we performed had not previously hosted live music, and yet further additionally distinguished by the fact that this sentence is 77 words long, unless you include these words, which raises the total to 88.
As it turns out, we had a few erroneous notions about this southernmost stretch of the United States. We figure we're doing you a favor by setting you straight on this:
- The Florida Keys are composed of about 1,700 islands, many of which are accessible only by jet pack, unless you have a boat.
- To get through the watery parts of England, you go through locks. Depite being even more watery, the Florida Keys have no locks, unless you go to a hardware store. Coincidence? We think not.
- We just watched the first episode of Bloodline, which was awesome. We learned about this series because they were filming it at our campground.
- The ubiquitous tiki theme is fun, much like the Fa'a'ā International Airport in Tahiti, except more fun.
- The Seven Mile Bridge is so long that it could connect Dummerston to Putney, Vermont, a distance of nearly seven miles.
- There is a Key West, but no Key East; there is a West Townshend, VT (where we live), but no East Townshend. Coincidence? We think not (or at least very little).
- Key West looks more like New Orleans than West Townshend.
- West Townshend looks more like West Dummerston than Key West.
- One night, whilst camping on Long Key, we squeezed into the Blue Meanie's cab to record "Static," from our newish CD, Further West, for submission to NPR's Tiny Desk Contest.
Our 2016 Further West Tour photo album has grown so big that it has begun to extort lunch money from schoolchildren; worse, it continues to grow on uncontrollably.
