Home is Where the House Is.
In June, 2002, we bought our little house part-way up Windham Hill in West Townshend, Vermont as a way to escape our stagnant Manhattan workaday existence, at least on the weekends (see photo). To make a regular story short, one day, we decided to stay in Vermont and become folk singers. We loved this house. It was on a charming hill and got lots of light. The only problem was that it was tiny. Not like those Blue-Meanie-sized houses that kids are into nowadays, but such that we had to rent a storage locker to keep Rebecca's bookcases, Ken's vinyl record collection and various musical and medieval medical instruments, amongst other essentials. And the recording studio, which was in fact the tinier of two tiny bedrooms, required that guests come equipped with both girdles and breath spray.
We live amongst a few other houses and one hotel on Lawrence Drive, not unlike those on a Monopoly™ board. On our many walks along our road, we would make a point of ogling the last house, which sat at the end of a long private driveway, owned and occupied by Mrs. Moberly, widowed as of late. The view was expansive and expensive, overlooking a delightful portion of the West River Valley. Best of all, the property was out of earshot of the logging trucks grinding up and down Windham Hill Road and traffic on its way to and from the inn. The house consisted of a few small, white buildings, cobbled together between the 1930s and 1980s. There was also a small, gambrel-roofed red barn, slightly larger than our current house, that cried out for repurposing as a the new Listen Here! Recording studio.
In 2015, Mrs. Moberly decided to move into town, away from this lovely but lonely location. We should have jumped on the opportunity, but we had a tour coming up, our credit was probably no good, the price might come down a bit more, we don't deserve anything nice, what would we do with all that space? To make a short story shorter, while we were looking for rational reasons to do nothing, someone else swooped in and bought our dream house.
That someone else was the Harrigans, also former New Yorkers with whom we quickly became good, if jealous, friends. They put a ton of work into their new place, including new roofs all round. While we were touring in New Zealand in March this year, we were blindsided by an email informing us that they were moving to Spain, and offering their neighbors first dibs on their house. We instantly got the Hall and Anderson family compounds on board to help us secure financing, and put our house on the market. We worked on these transactions over the next few months, and from thousands of miles away. To our great relief, we finally found a buyer for our house last month. If everything goes according to schedule, we close on the new place on the 15th and the old place on the 19th.
I realize now that I don't have enough space for a silly list. If everything goes according to schedule, maybe next month.
Since coming home from our last tour, we have already started our second photo album:
Part One
Part Two
